μπαϊπασάκης (plural μπαϊπασάκηδες) – a person who has had a heart bypass
By chance I ran into a former student a few days ago. She was with a friend, and my wife and I met up with them in the evening. We also had breakfast the following morning where the subject of fitness walking cropped up.
My ex-student described how early in the morning on Thessaloniki’s promenade, the same people could be seen walking briskly along the seafront. She added that it was easy to identify τους μπαϊπασάκηδες from the chest heart-monitoring belts that they wore – still discernible under their tops. Indeed, one woman even sports the belt over her top, visible for all to see.
The Greek for a heart bypass is μπαϊπάς or, if you prefer ten syllables, παρακαμπτήριος επέμβαση.
Incidentally, the adjectival -ος ending is still sometimes used with feminine nouns. Finally, I doubt if you’ll find μπαϊπασάκης in any dictionary. Nice word, though.
