αβγατίζω – avghatizo
It means to amass, increase
I thought it derived from the Greek for egg [αυγό] and I imagined hens sitting on eggs to help them hatch. Something akin to “nest egg” in English. Totally wrong, apparently. It derives either from an unrelated (to egg) Ancient Greek word or the Latin augere meaning increase. So we can say that people who worked from home on full pay during Covid 19 αβγάτισαν πολλά λεφτά as they didn’t have the expense of travelling to work, buying coffees and lunch etc.
A note on spelling. I’m not up to date with the latest spelling reforms, but I learnt to spell egg and ear with an υ: αυγό and αυτί. The latest rule on whether to spell the av/af or ev/ef sounds as αβ, αφ or αυ or εβ, εφ or ευ should be based on a word’s etymology. If a Modern Greek word’s Ancient Greek root was spelt αυ or ευ, the etymology should be respected e.g. αυλή and ευχαριστώ. In the case of αυγό and αυτί, the Ancient Greek words were ωόν and ους respectively i.e. there was no αυ so the correct spellings are now, supposedly, αβγό and αφτί. It will be hard for anyone over thirty to break the habit.
