24/005 Irish Music in Northern Greece

Monday, May 13th 2024. Yesterday we had our May session in the Dubliner. St Thomas’s Day in the Greek calendar, something that left my bank account lighter as I had to cross with silver the palms of the two Thomases in the family. It was also Mother’s Day, and Ken was once again very generous with the liqueurs.

The playing was very relaxed. In the end, we asked one of the waitresses to take some photos of the participants.

My current preoccupation is putting together a “request booklet”, a collection of easy songs to learn in case we are ever asked to sing them. It was more difficult than I first anticipated. The tunes tend to be fixed. For example, though the Kesh Jig can be played in any key, I have only played or heard it in G. Songs are a different matter. Getting the sheet music together is not straightforward, then using my intuition to guess who would sing the request and in what key has been a minefield. I have saved the Holy Ground in at least three keys!

My next task is to arrange the date of ThessHooley’s next gig with Ken.
