Miracles do happen. ΚΕΠ (the Centre for Public Services) has returned two of the παράβολα I submitted to get my Greek driving licence. I am due a refund of just over €100.
Luke Prodromou. Luke was a well-known figure in the TEFL world, especially in Greece. In the 80s he was first one of my RSA tutors and later my colleague in the British Council. He has just died at the age of 75. Seven years ago, he was diagnosed with ALS. What a sad end. Given Luke’s (lack of) religious beliefs, it is unlikely that he would have a church funeral. On top of that, it has been impossible to get any information on farewell arrangements. When I emailed one friend about Luke’s passing, he replied with the Latin phrase for “Don’t speak ill of the dead.” God knows what happened there. I also enlisted my rarely-used FB Messenger to contact his brother. No reply yet.
In searching for information online, I came across a crowd-funding web page posted in February by Luke. He was trying to raise £60,000 to fund the specialist and daily care he needed as well as the chance to pay for some “ innovative stem cell treatment” in Canada. Reading about his declining physical abilities was bad enough, but his frank discussion of his imminent impoverishment and possible homelessness broke my heart. I’m still in a state of shock.
