25/009 Greek Word – μούφα =  a coupler

Any little gizmo that connects two cables or pipes. I bought two like the one in the picture to connect two HDMIs.

Wiktionary defines it thus:

μούφα < ίσως (άμεσο δάνειο) αγγλική muff ή (άμεσο δάνειο) γαλλική mouffle + -α κατά το βάνα^[1]

1. υδραυλικό σωληνοειδές εξάρτημα το οποίο περιέχει, εσωτερικά, και στα δύο άκρα βόλτες και χρησιμοποιείται για να ενώσει δύο σωλήνες που περιέχουν εξωτερικές βόλτες στα άκρα τους
2. (μεταφορικά) το ψέμα, το παραμύθι

Babiniotis gives similar definitions but attributes its etymology to the German ‘Muffe’. (I will avoid any discussion of the word’s possible connection to ‘muff’ in English.)

www.slang.gr gives only its metaphorical meaning and three examples:

Κάτι είναι μούφα όταν είναι ψεύτικο ή φτιαχτό ή δεν είναι καλό.

ΠΑΡΑΔΕΙΓΜΑ

1. -Πω πω, μούφα το ντυσιματάκι της κοπελιάς ε;
   -Ναι. Μάλλον το πήγαινε για τρέντυ, αλλά δεν τα κατάφερε.
2. -Πω πω, μούφα η ταινία.
   -Κρίμα τα λεφτά μας ρε…
3. -Είναι πολύ μούφα η γκόμενα.
   -Ναι το παίζει και πολύ κάποια.

The above also add the sense of being a failure or flop.

Regarding the attached image, the first one gave me a picture but no sound. The second one refused to accept the HDMI on one side. So both μούφες in the first sense turned out to be μούφες in the second sense! In both cases!!
