25/012 Life in Northern Greece – Femicide

In my last post, I suggested a bar (actually a CAFÉ-ΟΥΖΕΡΙ) called Το Κάστρο might no longer host Greek musicians playing Greek music. I stopped there this morning to ask. My suspicions were correct.

I sometimes address the issue of spousal abuse here in Greece. Unfortunately, I have two more to report. The more recent one occurred in Volos where a 36-year-old foreign woman (that is how she is described) was killed in front of her children by her 40-year-old husband, who’s gone into hiding. He seems to have used some roasting or grilling instrument to carry out the deed, possibly  a spit or a skewer. The husband has a history of psychological issues and criminality. Good news – the fucker has just been caught: https://www.tanea.gr/2025/08/24/greece/gynaikoktonia-ston-volo-ston-eisaggelea-o-40xronos-pou-dolofonise-ti-syzygo-tou/ and this one suggests that the killer is unrepentant (καλά της έκανα), with jealousy being the root cause. https://www.tovima.gr/2025/08/24/society/gynaikoktonia-ston-volo-ametanoitos-o-40xronos-tha-ton-ekdikitho-leei-i-kori-tou/

In the above murder domestic violence was an issue, but it had not been reported to the authorities. However, in this earlier incident in which a 28-year-old man murdered his 47-year-old lover in Chalandri, the victim reported him to the police in March. As the police did not have enough specifics to go on, they “recommended” that the young man keep away from her: “Ωστόσο, όπως αναφέρεται σε ανακοίνωση που εξέδωσε το Αρχηγείο της ΕΛΑΣ., δεν είχε αναφέρει συγκεκριμένα αδικήματα ώστε να ενεργήσουν αυτεπαγγέλτως οι αρμόδιες αρχές, αλλά παρ’ όλα αυτά είχαν γίνει συστάσεις στον 28χρονο δράστη να μην την πλησιάζει.

Of course, women are capable of lying, but you would hope that something stronger than a “recommendation” could have been slapped on the man. He says the victim bad-mouthed him to mutual friends. That’s really surprising in a break-up. Couples who are splitting up tend to say the nicest things about each other.

One newspaper headline said that there had been 80 femicides in Greece over a four-year period. The years covered lockdown, which may account for the increased average. Over the longer term, the average seems to be 12 or 13 women a year are murdered by partners or ex-partners. Again, my purpose is not to highlight how evil Greek men are. The situation in the UK is even more depressing: Reports – Femicide Census

I hope my next post is a little more upbeat.
