25/019 Greek Word – γαμίδι – a source of annoyance.

As I have said previously, when you’re with young people you pick up new words, with νέρντουλας, κιούσπα and γαμίδι all being heard in one afternoon.

My nephew finished his schooling in England. He has been offered a place in a School of Medicine in Greece. As usual with life here, everything was last-minute and thus began the mad hunt to get his UK transcripts, which was followed by the even more insane task of getting transcripts recognised in Greece. More about this in 25/015 Life in Northern Greece. Anyway, when the necessary documentation was in his hands, my nephew said, “Έχω το γαμίδι” – I’ve got the fucking thing.

A very useful word which I intend to use as and when necessary. It can also be spelt γαμήδι.

https://el.wiktionary.org gives the following definitions. I’m not too sure about No. 1; I thought the γαμήσι was the result! Maybe I’m being culturally insensitive.

  1. το αποτέλεσμα του γαμησιού
  2. κάτι χαλασμένο, κακό, απαίσιο ή ενοχλητικό
  3. παλιοκατάσταση απαίσιο συναίσθημα ή απαίσιος τόπος, κωλομέρος΅
  4. κωλόπαιδο

And as can be seen be seen from No 4, the word can also refer to people. Good to know. More expressive than the now banal and overused μαλάκας, probably the closest approximation to ‘fucker’. Best word I’ve learnt in a while.
