ανασκουμπώνομαι – anaskubonomai – get down to work/roll up one’s sleeves.
A quick one this week. Ανασκουμπώνω literally means to roll up one’s sleeves. Sometimes I choose words simply because I like the sound of them. This is one of them. The word appeared in an article about a physiotherapist in the Serres area who has decided to change career and to cultivate the black bean. Apparently, it is a miracle food that fell out of favour a few decades ago. Source: https://www.voria.gr/article/mavra-fasolia-serron-ena-diaforetiko-superfood-apo-tin-ano-vrontou
The word occurred in this sentence: “Κάνοντας μια έρευνα αγοράς είδε πως το συγκεκριμένο είδος είναι κυρίως εισαγόμενο και αποφάσισε να ανασκουμπωθεί για να το καλλιεργήσει.” Translation: “After doing some market research, he saw that this precise kind [of bean] was mainly imported, so he decided to roll up his sleeves and cultivate it.”
It’s a regular verb so the past is ανασκουμπώθηκα and, after θα/να, you will usually find ανασκουμπωθώ (as in να ανασκουμπωθεί above).
