23/011 Irish Music in Northern Greece

Our session on 15th October was a quiet one. The bar was quiet too. The highlight of the afternoon was the fact that one of our Greek friends came up with a name for our new band, a bilingual pun: ThessHooley. It can mean θες Hooley (do you want a party?) or Thessaloniki Party. We liked it. We also liked the way he ceremoniously unfolded the scroll on which it was written.

ThessHooley had its inaugural practice on Thursday 19th. As we have decided to stick with the playlist we used in our March, May and September gigs, we practised new material – mainly songs. Personally, I was very pleased with the way it went. I never get fed up with the process of improvement. Before playing the songs, we played them instrumentally about 3 or 4 times before singing them. The melody players got them right while the accompanists – though correct from the beginning – grew in confidence.

There was only one song that we failed to get right on the night. This band, GADAN, plays it in E, but I think D or C would be better for us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYxHiZqeX9o It is easy to learn by ear, but on the night we had no music or chords.

I’m looking forward to the next practice.
