μανούρα = a ball ache. Well, that was the translation my bilingual interlocutor proffered. It is a colloquial word, not as vulgar as my interlocutor’s translation. It’s also missing from several dictionaries including the Babiniotis.
My Word Reference app defined it as “sth: requires effort” or “κτ που θέλει κόπο” while giving ταλαιπωρία as a synonym.
Βικιλεξικό defines it as κάτι επίπονο, δύσκολο, μπελάς.
www.slang.gr says μανούρα also means the false sabre-rattling that one often sees before a disagreement explodes into a fight – when the two protagonists don’t want to lose face and hope that their friends will hold them back. “I’m goanie kill you, ya bastard,” says one, while the other retorts, “Aye, you an’ whose army?” Of course, both are relieved when someone steps in or friends keep them apart before real punches are thrown.
