23/014 Greek Word

This time a phrase rather than a word. Western ideas can take a while to make their way to Greece. For example, the #MeToo movement was about three years behind, but it did end at least two careers. Now one horrible idea has hit Greece: zero hours contracts. Professional people are lucky to earn €700 net a month here, but the government has borrowed this inhumane practice from the west to further depress wages.  You go to work at 8am. Round about 11am your boss says it’s going to be quite for three hours and tells you to fuck off home and come back at 2pm. Of course, you don’t get paid. And it isn’t feasible for many people to return home, so they might remain at work unpaid.

The official opposition SYRIZA performed so badly in the June election that their unemployed and unemployable leader, Alexis Tsipras, had to resign. The situation in Parliament is that the Communists, PASOK and SYRIZA have only 100 seats out of 300, leaving New Democracy with an unassailable majority until 2027. The introduction of zero hours contracts is a sign that this government is going to be hostile to working people.

Anyway, this is the phrase:

μηδενικές ώρες = zero hours (contracts)
