In the UK the illegal dumping of rubbish is called ‘fly-tipping”. You take the unwanted items to a remote area and dump them. The ‘fly’ refers to the sly illegality of the practice. No such problem here in Greece where we have blatant tipping. Just throw everything in the street.
There are some great pics here. In that part of town the streets are very narrow and the pavements are no more than 70cm wide – that is if there ARE pavements. It’s hard enough to walk any distance on a pavement without having to negotiate your way round a jacuzzi. Unfortunately, this I-don’t-give-a-fuck attitude is alive and kicking.
Opposite us there is a park. A while back an old guy would drive in, park, open the rear door (while still at the wheel), and let his dog out to shit and pish in the park where kids played. That was the lazy fucker’s idea of walking the dog. It could be argued that as the park has no gates, stray dogs wander in and use it as a toilet, but there was no need to drive your mess in. It was reported, and – believe it or not – the police took action.
Maybe it’s a small price to pay for living in a society which is largely free of violence.
