1st September 2026. Summer was slow to arrive. Now it seems reluctant to cede this month to autumn.
Driving back from town yesterday, I was listening to Radio Thessaloniki. Unsurprisingly, the mass return from Halkidiki was causing problems on the roads. As I wasn’t affected by the delays, I paid more attention to the second topic, car insurance and road worthiness. The program claimed that over 2.5 million cars are on the road with no KTEO, the periodic vehicle inspection that all cars more than 4 years old are required to undergo in Greece. Even worse, it was claimed that anywhere between 500,000 and 750,000 cars are uninsured.
I did my car’s KTEO last month. It was very smooth. Mechanics took the car, clerical staff did the paperwork, I was provided with free coffee, water and a sandwich, and at the checkout I signed the relevant documents and paid the fees. Finally, most pleasantly for a Greek semi-governmental environment, the toilets were also spotless.
Still on the subject of transport, the Metro extension to Kalamaria and Mikra has opened. Alterations are also being made to bus services in line with this development. One other improvement is app. The horrible and useless ΟΑΣΘ has been replaced by OSETH Bus (why is it in Latin characters?). It worked perfectly on Sunday evening. I wonder if the ability of bus drivers to switch off the new app has been disabled.
