Tσουμπλέκι can also refer to a style of cooking where the vessel becomes synonymous with the food that is cooked in it, much like our use of, for example, chicken casserole. In fact, there are a few mouth-watering recipes online including this one http://www.fytokomia.gr/permalink/5833.html for Lamb Tsoubleki. As you can see from the ingredients, a τσουμπλέκι will be a large container: 2 kg of lamb, 2 aubergines, 4 small potatoes, 4 courgettes, 4 tomatoes, 2 carrots, 1 green pepper.
I heard the word in the plural and the context was not exactly complimentary: «όλα τα τσουμπλεκια» – loosely translated it meant I used “every bloody pot and pan” in the kitchen. (Some women have no gratitude when men cook. I wonder why.) In the plural, the word also has a wider meaning for an ill-defined collection of related objects, so τσουμπλέκι can also refer to computers and peripherals, band equipment, ornaments and decorations. I suppose the best translation here would be kit or gear.
So τσουμπλέκι is 1) a large earthenware pot, 2) a method of cooking, and 3) in the plural τσουμπλέκια is kit or gear, perhaps a near synonym of συμπράγκαλα.
