Greek Word 20/2021

γούβα – ghouva – a hole, depression or sinkhole.

Last week it rained most of the time. It does not take long for the roads, even main roads, to fill up with water. The incident in the article below happened on Ethnikis Antistaseos (National Resistance Street) the main east-west artery if you are driving into town from Perea and environs. There wasn’t much resistance, national or otherwise, when this happened. The article does not mention the word γούβα but it appears on the top of the second image.

A picture paints a thousand words so a γούβα is clearly a sinkhole. This one was 5 metres deep so the driver and passengers had a lucky escape. The main word in Greek for a hole is τρύπα [tripa].
