Greek Word 23/2021

ψεκασμένος – psekazmenos – literally “sprayed” from the verb ψεκάζω. By extension, a conspiracy theorist.

A frequent sight during Greek summers is the yellow aircraft with red tips on their way to fight another forest fire. Inevitably, there are those who believe that more than fire retardants are being sprayed from the skies. Anything from bromide to mind-altering drugs. The Greeks refer to such conspiracy theorists as “the sprayed”.

The Greek version of Wiki Dictionary says that the word with this meaning is relatively new: Η λέξη «ψεκασμένος», με την έννοια του οπαδού θεωριών συνωμοσίας, εμφανίστηκε σε πρωτοσέλιδο εφημερίδας («ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΗ ΩΡΑ») το 2012, με τον τίτλο «ΜΑΣ ΨΕΚΑΖΟΥΝ ΟΙ ΑΜΕΡΙΚΑΝΟΙ»

According to the above, it came into use following a headline in an extreme right newspaper in 2012. “THE AMERICANS ARE SPRAYING US,” it screamed.

So, in the time of Covid, there is no lack of ψεκασμένοι (conspiracy theorists) with their θεωρίες συνωμοσίας (conspiracy theories).
