Irish Music in Northern Greece 21/2022

The scheduled practice for Wednesday, 9th Nov had to be cancelled because the pub had some event booked. Plan B – to go to someone’s house – was rendered impossible by a 24-hour strike, so there were no buses or taxis on Wednesday.

We like to use practices before sessions for a combination of band numbers and new session sets. Obviously, this did not happen. I also think I added too much new session material, so I was a bit concerned about how things would go on 13th.

They went very well. Leta, who works in Athens, tries to program her visits to Thessaloniki to coincide with the sessions. A new fiddler, Ilias, joined us. And the hard core – about 6 or 7 of us – were all there bar one, who was abroad. On top of that, the age range (currently 14 – 73) is widening as a 5-year-old is determined to learn the spoons, so much so that his Irish granny has ordered a set from Ireland. The pub was so busy it was hard to hear ourselves at times. Not that I’m complaining – the overall atmosphere was great.

I hate Facebook and consider Zuckerberg to be the spawn of Satan, so I have to ask my daughter for feedback on the session. No negative comments. Some Athenians moaning about not having something similar in Athens. I’ve offered to help. I still await the call.

Our next practice will be on 23rd at Kathleen’s place. I’ll send a reminder out tomorrow.
