14th August. Not much going on.
On 7th August, I sent a Viber text to the manager of Arhegono proposing four session dates from September through to December. I am still awaiting a reply. I hope the lack of a response is due to seasonal torpor rather than a sign that we are losing the venue.
Not exactly traditional music, but the Rumjacks are doing three gigs in Greece as part of their European tour. They we will be in Thessaloniki on Saturday, 4th September. There seems to be little enthusiasm for the gig on my Viber Sessions group, so it looks like I’ll be going to Eight Ball on my own. One possible reason for the lack of enthusiasm might be the venue itself. The weather will still be hot and Eight Ball is a hall.
Here are a couple of samples of their music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jK2Gdhjtqd4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtRyoD3HLgU
I wonder if I’ll be the oldest person in the audience. Punk – Celtic or otherwise – is not my scene. I was in my early twenties when Punk was all the rage. My mates wanted us to drive from Dover (where we worked) to London to see the Sex Pistols. I refused saying, “There’s no way I’m going to pay £4 or £5 to have some arseholes spit on me. I can get that in Glasgow for free.” There was some truth in that. One summer afternoon we had been to our school’s playing fields in Bishopbriggs. While we were waiting for a bus to take us back to Glasgow, we tried hitching a lift in the hope that we’d get back to the city a little earlier. A car did pull up, the passenger door window opened, the passenger spat at us, and the car drove off. It took us a few seconds before we wealised why. Our school uniforms marked us as Catholics. Today it would be called a hate crime, but for my pal, Kevin, and me, it was just another day in the Glasgow area.
