In mid-June in Drama, a town about 2 – 3 hours north east of Thessaloniki, a 50-year-old policeman stabbed his 45-year-old policewoman wife seven times before shooting himself in the temple. About two weeks before the murder-suicide, the estranged husband had also threatened his wife with a gun. Two issues come to mind. 1) Why wasn’t he in detention, and 2) was the gun he used to threaten her and end his own life his service weapon?

Six in 2023
Fifteen in 2024
Nineteen in 2025
Five so far 2026 (January to June)
The spike between 2020 and 2022 might be attributable to Covid, but the sharp rise since 2023 is harder to explain.
