Irish Music in Northern Greece 22/2022

On Sunday, 11th December, we had our last session of 2022. Ten of us were there. Personally, being a fiddler, I missed the other violins, but we delivered the full program. I change the music every two months, usually adding around five new items, but with Christmas and New Year coming up, I will recycle tunes we have already done and add only two new tunes. The nice thing was the atmosphere in the Dubliner. Some of us will be there on Thursday for the Dubliner’s Christmas Dinner. Three years ago, Dec 18th, 2019, I was enjoying my first Christmas dinner in the pub. While munching my turkey, I got an email from my employer/contractor saying that I was canned. About 30 minutes later I got a WhatsApp message from the boss to whom I was contracted confirming the same. It wasn’t totally unexpected. The Saudis had changed their business visa rules and I was toast. The boss moved hell and high water to keep me, not because of my brilliant teaching skills but because he needed me in the Desert Road String Band! He played tenor banjo, and our trio was complete with a brilliant Scottish guitarist. The point is – even with the bad news – I had a good time. That’s a good pub.
