While browsing www.voria.gr I came across a sad story where a man in his 30s had barricaded himself and some family members in their home. He was armed with a γκασμάς. Fortunately, the police persuaded the man to hand himself in. As in many of these cases, the man had stopped taking his medication.
From the context it was obvious that a γκασμάς was either a weapon or something that could be used as a weapon. It turned out to be a pickaxe, but it didn’t end there. As in many cases, a word search leads one down many alleys. Rarely do you find a one-to-one correspondence like βότσαλο = pebble, and that’s the end of that.
Γκασμάς can also refer to an inhabitant of the island of Lesbos: “Ο Μυτιληνιός κοροιδευτικά. Ο τύπος που έχει γεννηθεί και διαμένει στη Λέσβο. Φημολογείται ότι το παρατσούκλι αυτό εμπνεύστηκε όταν χτιζόταν το αεροδρόμιο της Λέσβου γιατί όταν οι ντόπιοι κληθήκαν εθελοντικά να σκάψουν στα έργα πήγαν όλοι εξοπλισμένοι με γκασμάδες και κανένας με οποιοδήποτε άλλο εργαλείο.”

The residents of the town of Σουφλί: Γκάτζολοι – Donkeys. Στο Σουφλί του νομού Έβρου παλαιότερα υπήρχαν πολλά γαϊδούρια, τα οποία τα έλεγαν αλλιώς και γκάτζους. Έτσι οι φαντάροι έβγαλαν κοροϊδευτικά την περιοχή Γκατζολία και έμεινε να φωνάζουν τους κατοίκους Γκάτζολους. Η ιστορική αμαξοστοιχία 604 ΕΒΡΟΣ ΕΞΠΡΕΣ λέγεται και Γκάτζος Εξπρές. Donkeys! The good people of Kozani: Σούρδοι – Deaf or stupid. Λέγονται έτσι διότι προσποιούνταν ότι δεν άκουσαν κάτι – κοινώς ποιούσαν τη νήσσαν – όταν φυσικά δεν τους συνέφερε. Και ενώ οι μεν υπόλοιποι Έλληνες τους δέχτηκαν με αυτήν τους τη νοοτροποία, οι δε Εβραίοι δεν κατάφεραν να στεργιώσουν ούτε στιγμή στην περιοχή. Στα βλάχικα σούρδος σημαίνει κουφός / βλάκας. Although Vlach is a Romance language, I find still find the closeness of σούρδος surprisingly close to the French ‘sourd’.
Returning to γκασμάς – yet another Turkish borrowing – kazma, the word also refers to the throaty revving up noise of a motornoke or sports car. And last but not least: Ο γκασμάς είναι αγροτικό εργαλείο, αναφέρεται σε άτομα με προεξέχοντα τα μπροστινά πάνω δόντια. So, someone with buck teeth.
